Biography
Rachna Mehra, the niece of Shri Kedaar Nath Khatri.
A famous dancer and disciple of Padam Shri Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, demonstrates a perfect synthesis of technicalities and expressions used in classical dance through her masterful voice. She started her first vocal training at the age of 6 from Mahesh Chand Jain in Etawah (U.P.), India.
She then continued her further vocal training from Late Naushe Ali Warsi, a well-known singer of All India Radio Lucknow (U.P.), India, the son of Janab Zafar Ali Sahib who used to be an artist of Maharaja Jaipur’s Darbar.
Growing up and even before completing her master’s degree, Rachna was working as a music teacher in Navoday Vidyalay, Sultanpur City and Kanpur City in India. She also taught music in Our Lady of Fatima Convent School in Gurgaon, Haryana, India for 10 years.
She is double masters in music; in tabla: rank holder from Khairagarh University (M.P.), India; she has achieved so many awards and recognitions at state & national level in both Tabla as well as Vocal in India
The Gharanas
Rachna took her very advance ghazal training from Shri Riaz Khan Sahib, the son of legendary Hamid Hussain Sahib. She believed that Music is infinite and it is a lifelong learning because of it’s depth, so she continued her Ghazal & Bhajan training from Jumman Meer Sahib, disciple of Ustaad Waheed Khan (Kirana Gharana), in Gurgaon, India. Later she moved to Canada and took further classical music training underthe disciple of Late Shri Sagar Mastana from Patiala Gharana, whose younger son, Sardool Sikander, whose work has been included in over 50 derivative albums from all over the world.
Rachna also learned Tabla for 18 years from Late Shri Ustaad Uma Sharan Varma, son of legendary Shri Kallu Ustaad (Banaras Gharana) in Etawah (U.P.).
Achievements
INDIA:
– In 1996 Rachna got selected by T.SERIES (Gulshan Kumar) as a professional Ghazal singer in Mumbai, India.
– In 1999 Rachna’s first Haryanvi album ‘AATM MANTHAN’ was released by Honorable Governor of Haryana State, Shri Mahaveer Prasad, in Chandigarh, India.
CANADA:
– In 2001 Rachna migrated to Canada and since then she has performed with many reputed artists like Anup Jalota, Shauqat Ali, Arvinder Singh, Sabar Koti, Sardool Sikander, and Amar Noori etc.
– In 2008 Rachna’s first album “A Tribute to Noor Jahan & Surinder Kaur” was released in Canada.
-In 2009 Rachna’s 2nd Punjabi album “Chan” was released in Canada.
– In 2010 Rachna’s 3rd Punjabi religious Shabad album “Tu hi Tu hi” was released in Canada.
– In 2012 Rachna’s ”MA SHERA WALIYE”, a devotional album was released.
– In 2016 Rachna visited Guayana to perform professionally.
Today, Rachna is a proud owner of a music academy ‘RM Musical Beats,’ where she teaches Vocal, Tabla and Harmonium to students of all ages. She also provides specialized vocal training for making professional CD’s and albums.
Awards
2002:‘Urdu Preservation Society of Canada’ presented her ‘The Best Female Tabla Player Award.’
2007:‘Mehfil Group of Toronto’ presented her ‘Jewel of the Community Award’ for her music.
